Anomalous deaths & disappearances in strategically sensitive domains
Built 2026-06-14. Verified against Meduza, Reuters/BBC/AP/NYT/NPR, the Charleston County Coroner, RFE/RL & USIP's Iran Primer, Newsweek/SCMP-sourced reporting, and the US House Select Committee on the CCP. Full URLs at the bottom.
Discipline first — this is a topic engineered for conspiracy, so the method is the point. The honest finding is not "one hidden hand is killing everyone." It is that there are several distinct clusters, each with a different evidentiary status, and the value is in refusing to collapse them into one story. Every case below is graded by attribution quality. No unified campaign is asserted, and no person or state is accused beyond what a court, coroner, government, or major outlet already states.
0. The base-rate floor (read this before any list "looks" sinister)
- Denominators are huge. Thousands of senior Russian energy executives, thousands of crypto founders, tens of thousands of China-affiliated defense scientists. In populations that large, a steady stream of heart attacks, cancers, accidents, and suicides is statistically expected. A list of N "striking" deaths is meaningless without the base rate.
- Lists are curated after the fact to include only the deaths that look suspicious (young, sudden, prominent) and exclude the ordinary majority — textbook selection bias plus the human tendency to over-detect patterns in random clustering.
- What would actually elevate a cluster: (a) a common, specific antecedent (all just testified; all on one program), (b) implausible cause-of-death mechanics, (c) official attribution, or (d) a credible actor with motive and demonstrated capability. Those tests are applied per-strand.
1. Russian energy & finance executives (2022– ) — real cluster, cause unestablished
The most statistically striking civilian cluster. Independent outlet Meduza (Jul 2025) reviewed the sudden deaths of ~13 Russian energy and transportation executives since 2022; broader "suspicious deaths of Russian businesspeople" tallies run higher. Firms touched: Gazprom, Lukoil, Transneft, Novatek, Gazprombank.
- Named cases: Ravil Maganov (Lukoil chairman, fell from a hospital window, Sep 2022); Leonid Shulman & Alexander Tyulyakov (Gazprom units, Jan/Feb 2022); Vladislav Avayev (Gazprombank VP, official "murder-suicide", Apr 2022); Vladimir Nekrasov (Lukoil chairman, "acute heart failure", Oct 2023); Andrei Badalov (Transneft VP, fell from a window, Jul 2025).
- Attribution: contested — no established perpetrator. No body has tied these to a coordinated campaign. Hypotheses span Kremlin/elite enforcement, sanctions-driven ruin and suicide, business/organized-crime disputes, and coincidence. Russian official causes are widely distrusted given the information environment but are not independently disproven. Grade: fact (deaths) + contested (cause).
2. Iranian nuclear scientists (2007– ) — the one strand with formal attribution
The clearest case where "scientists keep dying" has a documented mechanism and an attributed actor.
- Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, Iran's top nuclear scientist ("the brains"), assassinated near Tehran 27 Nov 2020 with a remote-operated, AI-assisted machine gun (NYT). At least the fifth Iranian nuclear-linked scientist killed or dead in suspicious circumstances since ~2007.
- Earlier: Masoud Ali Mohammadi (2010, motorcycle bomb), Majid Shahriari (2010), Darioush Rezaeinejad (2011), Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan (2012, Natanz supervisor, magnetic car bomb).
- Attribution: widely reported as an Israeli covert-action campaign (Israel historically does not claim such operations). Grade: fact (killings) + labeled interpretation (attribution).
3. Chinese defense / microelectronics / military-AI researchers — reported cluster, unverified, no perpetrator
- Reported deaths: ~10 Chinese scientists flagged in suspicious circumstances, several in 2023, working on drones, military AI, microelectronics, and Taiwan-invasion simulations — e.g., Feng Yanghe (defense-tech professor, car crash, Jul 2023, reportedly working on Taiwan-conflict simulations); Zhou Guangyuan (chemist, died at 51, Dec 2023, no cause given); Zhang Xiaoxin (space expert, reported car accident, Dec 2024).
- Disappearances are a different phenomenon: senior PRC tech-defense officials have been detained in anti-corruption / loyalty purges (e.g., Chen Zhaoxiong, ex-chairman of China Electronics Technology Group, 2024) — documented internal state action, not unexplained death.
- Attribution: reporting explicitly states no evidence links the Chinese cases to US cases or to each other. Plausible: accidents/illness, internal security actions, selection bias. Grade: contested → unsupported (no perpetrator established). (Intersects geopolitics-chip-chokepoint-war / spec-rare-earth-statecraft / Taiwan.)
4. Aerospace whistleblowers (Boeing, 2024) — official causes documented; suspicion is timing-driven
- John Barnett — ex-Boeing quality manager, found dead 9 Mar 2024 in Charleston, SC, the day after a deposition in his retaliation suit. The Charleston County Coroner + police (reports released 17 May 2024) concluded self-inflicted gunshot; records note PTSD/anxiety. Family and counsel doubted it given the timing. Grade: fact (official ruling) + contested (timing).
- Joshua Dean — Spirit AeroSystems auditor and 737-MAX whistleblower; died 1 May 2024 (45) of a fast-spreading infection (reported MRSA); his mother requested an autopsy. Grade: fact (illness); no foul-play evidence.
- The substantive issue is the underlying safety and retaliation allegations, which stand on their own regardless of the deaths. Two related whistleblowers dying within ~2 months is a striking coincidence; no evidence of foul play has emerged. (Intersects accountability / macro-official-data-integrity.)
5. Crypto figures (2022–2023) — mostly base-rate coincidence
The most over-hyped strand. Nikolai Mushegian (MakerDAO/DAI co-architect) drowned in Puerto Rico (28 Oct 2022) hours after a paranoid tweet; Tiantian Kullander (Amber Group co-founder) died in his sleep at 30 (Nov 2022); Vyacheslav Taran died in a helicopter crash (Nov 2022); others (Biosca, Pérez Algaba) involved unrelated crime/violence. Newsweek and others note limited-to-no evidence of any plot — heterogeneous causes (drowning / natural / aviation) are not a signature. This strand best illustrates the base-rate caveat. Grade: labeled interpretation (mostly coincidence). (Context for spec-onchain-threat-actor-addresses.)
6. Synthesis — five clusters, five different truths
Strongest → weakest evidence: (1) Iranian nuclear scientists = documented, attributed state campaign · (2) Russian energy executives = real, sustained, statistically striking cluster, cause unestablished · (3) Boeing whistleblowers = official causes documented, suspicion timing-driven · (4) Chinese defense scientists = reported cluster, circumstances unverified, no perpetrator · (5) crypto figures = largely coincidence. The disciplined point is methodological: "they keep disappearing" is a pattern-claim that must be decomposed and graded, not asserted as one conspiracy.
What is NOT asserted
- No single actor or coordinated campaign across these clusters.
- The Russian-executive and Chinese-scientist deaths are unexplained clusters, not established murders; official causes are distrusted but not disproven.
- No party is accused of causing the Boeing deaths — official causes are suicide (Barnett) and infection (Dean); the safety/retaliation allegations are the real issue.
- The crypto deaths are not asserted as foul play.
- Overlay edges (state-action / relationship / regulatory) are excluded from the SCC / Z3 / TLA+ proofs.
