xAI Colossus - Gulf/Nvidia-financed GPUs + the Memphis gas-turbine fight
xAI's Colossus buildout ties three of the map's threads together at one site: the AI-capital loop (circular Nvidia/Gulf financing), the power bottleneck (on-site gas turbines), and an environmental-justice fight.
The financing (fact; splits reported)
xAI closed a ~$20B round (Jan 2026, ~$230B valuation) - reportedly ~$7.5B equity + ~$12.5B debt routed through an SPV that buys Nvidia GPUs and rents them to xAI (the same off-balance-sheet template as Meta/Blue Owl's Beignet and the neocloud wall). Nvidia put ~$2B equity into a vehicle buying Nvidia's own chips - a textbook circular supplier-funds-buyer loop. Other investors: MGX, QIA, Qatar, Fidelity, StepStone, Baron, Cisco, Apollo. xAI reportedly burns ~$1B/month.
The power (fact; counts point-in-time)
Colossus runs on on-site methane turbines to beat the grid-interconnection queue:
- Colossus 1 (Memphis, TN): ~35 turbines (~421MW) for over a year before a July 2025 permit (for 15, as "emergency backup").
- Colossus 2 (Southaven, MS): ~57-59 turbines; 40-90 planned, up to ~1.5GW - far above initial need.
Behind-the-meter generation moves emissions off the utility's books and onto the datacenter.
The fight (allegations; ongoing)
The NAACP + Mississippi NAACP (Earthjustice + SELC) sued xAI + subsidiary MZX Tech over the unpermitted Southaven turbines - alleging Clean Air Act violations with potential to emit ~1,700 tons/yr NOx plus PM, CO, and formaldehyde, in predominantly Black communities (an environmental-justice claim). A permit issued ~one week after an xAI official discussed the site with President Trump; groups called the process rushed. These are allegations in ongoing litigation - no final finding, and no causation is asserted on the permit timing.
Why it's on the map
Colossus is the AI-capital loop made physical: circular chip financing -> a private, unrated, cash-burning buildout -> powered by unpermitted gas -> borne by a specific community. It sits in the same debt cohort as the neocloud wall and shares the Nvidia-circularity concern of the whole ecosystem.
Honest limits
Round/SPV/valuation = fact (private co, press-reported splits); turbine counts = point-in-time, vary by site/date; the lawsuit = allegations, ongoing; "circular financing," the env-justice framing, and the permit-timing juxtaposition = interpretation (no causation claimed). Structural overlay - no financial-core edges.
