US automakers — Ford, GM, Stellantis, Tesla, Rivian, Lucid: EV losses, Cruise wind-down, the VW/Amazon/PIF backers, and NACS (both sides, dated)
Built 2026-06-28 from research/spec-us-automakers.json. Sub-block of the auto epic (#177). Cross-links Tesla, Amazon, VW, PIF, NACS_Standard, US_Auto_Makers. Political/labor threads (UAW, dealer-franchise, IRA) → #183.
Frame. The Detroit incumbents (Ford, GM, Stellantis), the EV-natives (Tesla, Rivian, Lucid), and their foreign/Big-Tech backers (VW→Rivian, Amazon→Rivian, Saudi PIF→Lucid). Threads: heavy EV losses at the incumbents, GM's Cruise robotaxi wind-down, Stellantis's leadership blow-up, Tesla's NACS charging-standard win + robotaxi + the Musk-politics brand overhang. Discipline. Makers, the Cruise wind-down, the Tavares ouster, the VW-Rivian JV, the Amazon/PIF stakes, and NACS/robotaxi are fact. EV-strategy and Tesla-brand readings are presented both ways with dates. Overlay; excluded from the proofs.
1. The incumbents (fact)
Ford (strong ICE/hybrid + Pro commercial; its Model e EV unit lost ~$5B/yr, prompting 2024-25 EV pullbacks/retiming), General Motors (Ultium battery platform; BrightDrop; Super Cruise), and Stellantis (14 brands incl. Jeep/Ram/Dodge/Chrysler + EU brands) — whose CEO Carlos Tavares was ousted (1 Dec 2024) amid a US inventory glut, dealer revolt, and sales slump; Antonio Filosa became CEO (2025). Fact.
2. The Cruise wind-down (fact)
After an Oct-2023 incident in which a Cruise vehicle dragged a pedestrian (and California suspended its permits), GM cut funding and in Dec 2024 announced it would wind down Cruise as a robotaxi business, folding the tech into GM for personal-vehicle driver-assist. Fact.
3. The EV-natives + backers (fact)
Tesla (volume EV leader; Cybertruck; FSD; launched an Austin robotaxi service, 2025); Rivian (R1T/R1S + coming R2/R3) — Amazon is its largest shareholder + EDV van customer, and Volkswagen Group formed a JV (announced 2024, up to ~$5.8B) to use Rivian's software/electrical architecture; Lucid (Gravity SUV) — majority-backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF, ~60%), high cash burn / low volume. Fact.
4. NACS + the Musk overhang
Tesla's standard win: Tesla opened its connector as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), and in 2023-24 Ford, GM, and nearly all other US makers adopted NACS for future EVs + Supercharger access — a proprietary design becoming the industry standard. The overhang: Elon Musk's political activity (incl. the 2025 DOGE role) is widely linked to Tesla brand damage + a 2025 sales softening — recorded both ways (a real reputational/sales effect vs Tesla's structural EV lead). NACS adoption fact; the Musk-brand effect is documented but its magnitude is contested.
5. The two sides (both ways, dated)
- (A) Transition-winners. Tesla leads EVs + set the charging standard; Ford/GM pace EV to demand while milking profitable trucks/hybrids; foreign + Big-Tech capital (VW, Amazon, PIF) funds the EV-natives.
- (B) Stress. Incumbent EV units lose billions; GM's robotaxi bet failed; Stellantis imploded at the top; Lucid/Rivian burn cash; Tesla faces Musk-driven brand/sales risk + slowing EV growth + the 2025 IRA-credit rollback.
Both documented.
6. The honest reading
A split screen: Tesla's genuine EV + NACS lead and the EV-natives' marquee backers (VW, Amazon, PIF) on one side; billions in incumbent EV losses, GM's failed Cruise robotaxi, Stellantis's leadership blow-up, and Tesla's Musk-politics brand risk on the other. The dated facts (Tavares out Dec-2024, Cruise wound down Dec-2024, VW-Rivian JV 2024, NACS adoption 2023-24, Tesla Austin robotaxi 2025) are clear; the EV-strategy and Musk-brand readings are presented both ways. Political/labor threads continue in #183. Overlay; excluded from the proofs.
