Stripe's stablecoin stack - Bridge + Privy + Tempo + Open Issuance
Stripe (Patrick + John Collison) - the dominant private payments platform - has assembled a full-stack stablecoin platform, moving from card processing into issuance, wallets, and settlement rails.
The stack
- Bridge (acquired ~$1.1B, reported the largest stablecoin-infra deal to date; founder Zach Abrams) - cross-chain stablecoin rails: accept USDC on Solana, convert to EURC on Ethereum, settle fiat, one API. Feb 2026: Bridge received a conditional OCC national trust bank charter (issuance, custody, reserves) - a second OCC crypto-bank charter alongside spec-erebor-bank.
- Privy (acquired 2025) - embedded crypto-wallet infra, 75M+ wallets (figures vary 50-110M) across 1,000+ teams (e.g. OpenSea), no seed-phrase UX - the wallet layer.
- Tempo (Stripe + Paradigm, incubated 4 Sep 2025; Matt Huang leads; independent co) - a payments-focused Layer-1 (targets 100k+ TPS, sub-second finality); Series A ~$500M at ~$5B (Thrive/Greenoaks, Oct 2025); mainnet Mar 2026 with Visa/Nubank/Shopify partners. Klarna's KlarnaUSD (a bank-issued stablecoin) and World Liberty Financial's USD1 (the Trump-family-linked venture, May 2026) run on it.
- Open Issuance (Sep 2025) - launch a custom stablecoin in a few lines of code; reserves managed by BlackRock, Fidelity, Superstate; early users Phantom, Hyperliquid, ConsenSys/MetaMask.
Why it's on the map
This is the payments giant verticalizing the entire stablecoin lifecycle (issuance -> wallets -> L1 -> settlement) and routing the resulting float, via Open Issuance reserves, into BlackRock/Fidelity Treasury vehicles - the stablecoin-Treasury rail. It parallels the Erebor OCC-charter path, hosts the politically charged WLFI USD1, and squares off against Visa (USDC settlement) and Mastercard (Circle + BVNK). The CLARITY/GENIUS stablecoin fights are the regulatory backdrop.
Honest limits
Acquisitions, launches, the OCC charter, and named partners are fact; several third-party figures conflict (Privy wallet counts; Bridge close date reported Feb/Apr/May 2025) and are graded "reported, varies"; the "AWS for money" / full-stack-control framing is interpretation. The WLFI political-conflict angle is tracked in the CLARITY/ethics thread, graded.
