Strategic reading lenses — Sun Tzu, the Simple Sabotage manual, and Confucius

Built 2026-06-14. Texts verified before use: Sun Tzu (suntzusaid.com / Giles; Columbia text), the OSS Simple Sabotage Field Manual (1944; Project Gutenberg #26184; CIA-declassified 2008), the Analects (12.7, 13.3, 2.3, 15.24; Legge/Lau/Slingerland + Chinese source). Full URLs at the bottom.

Three texts, read at depth (not the famous one-liners), used as lenses over the whole corpus. They converge on one idea: the decisive variable in a contested system is not arms or money but legitimacy / trust, and the cheapest way to win is to erode a rival's cohesion, alliances, and strategy — not fight its army. These are interpretive lenses and graded interpretation, not claims of proven coordinated intent.

Lens 1 — Sun Tzu (past "win without fighting")

• The Five Factors (五事) open with the Way. War's determinants, in order: 道 the Moral Law / "the Way" — whether the people are in complete accord with their ruler (legitimacy/cohesion) — then 天 Heaven (timing), 地 Earth (position), 將 the Commander (wisdom/sincerity/benevolence/courage/strictness), 法 Method (organization/logistics). Legitimacy is the first factor.
• Hierarchy of attack (Ch. 3): attack the enemy's strategy first, then his alliances, then his army, and only worst-case besiege cities. The dollar system is the strategic center of gravity — attack the strategy and split the alliances, not the "army."
• Economy of force (Ch. 2): "There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare." Attrition drains the waging state — so delay cuts both ways, and forcing tempo is a counter.
• Foreknowledge & the five spies (Ch. 13): victory rests on intelligence from people, not omens; the five spies are local, inward, converted, doomed (carrying deliberate disinformation), and surviving. "Doomed spies" are the ancestor of modern influence-ops.

Lens 2 — the Simple Sabotage Field Manual (past the committee meme)

• Provenance: OSS, 17 Jan 1944; CIA-declassified 2008; to train ordinary "citizen-saboteurs."
• Physical sabotage targets communications — telephone, telegraph, power, radio, newspapers, placards: the means authorities use to transmit instructions and morale. The information layer is the prime target.
• Organizational + morale sabotage — insist on "channels"; refer matters to large committees "for further study"; haggle over precise wordings; raise irrelevant issues; give lengthy incomprehensible explanations; misfile; spread disturbing rumors.
• The deniable "human element" is the weapon — a second type "requires no destructive tools whatsoever": faulty decisions, non-cooperation, inducing others to follow — "frequently responsible for accidents, delays, and general obstruction even under normal conditions." It is indistinguishable from ordinary dysfunction, so obstruction can be foreign-induced or self-inflicted and you usually can't tell which.

Lens 3 — Confucius's Analects (past 12.7)

• 12.7 — trust over arms and food: give up arms first, then food; never trust — 民無信不立, "without the people's trust the state cannot stand." Legitimacy is the irreducible base.
• 13.3 — rectification of names (正名): "if names are not correct… affairs cannot succeed… punishments miss the mark… the people know not where to put hand or foot." Calling things by their true names is the precondition of a functioning state and the antidote to propaganda — exactly this project's grading discipline (surveillance named "safety," control named "inclusion," a lobby conflated with a people are all failures of zhengming).
• 2.3 — virtue vs coercion: rule by law+punishment → people evade without shame; rule by virtue (德) + ritual (禮) → people gain shame and self-correct. Coercion breeds evasion; legitimacy breeds self-correction — the through-line of the control-rail threads.
• The web of virtues — 仁 ren, 禮 li, 義 yi, 信 xin, 恕 shu (reciprocity, 15.24), in the 君子. Translations differ materially (Legge/Lau/Slingerland; classical vs Japanese kanbun readings), so claims cite the passage, not one rendering.

The long game (the synthesis thesis)

A patient challenger can benefit from helping many rivals/currencies rise — because each erodes the incumbent's entrenchment (network effects, sanctions leverage) — before bidding for its own dominance later. "Let a hundred flowers bloom" as anti-hegemony, not generosity. By all three lenses the incumbent's true center of gravity is legitimacy/trust — of the dollar, of institutions, of shared facts — so eroding trust is higher-leverage and cheaper than any monetary or military attack. Crucially this cuts both ways: the same trust-erosion is self-inflictable (polarization, dysfunction, data-integrity doubt), and the sabotage manual says you usually can't tell foreign-induced from home-grown. The lens indicts a state of affairs, not one conspirator. (All labeled interpretation.)
