Niantic: from a CIA-seeded mapping startup to a crowdsourced 3D world - and who owns the location data now
John Hanke's career is the throughline of consumer geospatial surveillance.
The lineage
- Keyhole (Hanke co-founded, 2001) - a satellite/aerial 3D-mapping startup funded by In-Q-Tel (the CIA's venture arm) in 2003, alongside NGA/NIMA (defense mapping). Used in early-2000s military ops.
- Google acquired Keyhole (2004) - its engine became Google Earth (2005) and fed Google Maps: the mass-consumer adoption of IC-seeded tech.
- Niantic - Hanke founded Niantic Labs inside Google (2010), spun out 2015. Shipped Ingress (2012) and Pokemon GO (2016).
Critical caveat (kept from the original block): In-Q-Tel/NGA funded Keyhole, not Niantic. The intelligence tie is via Hanke's heritage only - this does not imply IQT funds Niantic or that any agency accesses Niantic data today.
The games as a crowdsourcing engine
Ingress "portal" submissions and Pokemon GO gameplay drive hundreds of millions of players to physically visit, photograph, and 3D-scan real-world locations - continuous precise GPS + sensor + camera data. Aggregated, this builds Niantic's proprietary map + Visual Positioning System. Niantic acquired Scaniverse (3D-scanning app) to source high-fidelity scans directly.
The real asset: spatial AI
Nov 2024: Niantic announced a Large Geospatial Model - AI trained on ~10M+ player-scanned locations to reconstruct/understand the physical world for AR and robotics/navigation. The games were, functionally, a data-collection front-end for a spatial-AI foundation model.
Who owns it now
- Mar 2025: Niantic sold its games (Pokemon GO, Ingress, Monster Hunter Now) to Scopely for ~$3.5B, keeping the geospatial AI as "Niantic Spatial."
- Scopely is owned by Savvy Games Group, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF, ~$4.9B, 2023) - so the world's largest real-world-location game now sits under a foreign sovereign wealth fund. That's a governance/access risk (interpretation grounded in the ownership fact), not an alleged breach.
Honest limits
Player scanning is opt-in-ish (consent buried in gameplay); the concern is the aggregate map + ownership, not a specific leak. Location data broadly flows into the data-broker ecosystem (SDKs/ad exchanges) - a systemic risk around any large location dataset, wired here to the LexisNexis/auto-surveillance thread, not a claimed Niantic sale.
