Epstein document corpus — an authenticity / provenance grading layer (treating forgery as a first-class variable)

Built 2026-06-13 from research/spec-epstein-document-authenticity.json. Verified: House Oversight releases + the Epstein Files Transparency Act (HR 4405), DOJ justice.gov/epstein disclosures + the July-2025 FBI/DOJ memo, WSJ/NBC/AP/NPR/Britannica timelines, fact-checks on fabricated items, TIME/LMG on redaction failures.

What this is — and isn't. Per the standing instruction to assume an indeterminable share of the Epstein documents may be forgeries, this is an epistemics layer that grades the document corpus by provenance and verificationnot a catalog of who is named, and it restates no allegations. It grades documents, not people, makes no allegation against any living person, and the only living-person mentions record a person's own public dispute of a document's authenticity. Nothing here enters the proofs. "A document was released" is never the same as "its contents are authentic or true."

Why authenticity must be treated as a variable

The documented record itself proves the corpus is mixed:

The authenticity rubric (grade each item, independent of whether it's flattering or damning)

P1 Provenance (court-unsealed > official DOJ > estate-via-subpoena > media-original > anonymous leak > social image) · P2 Chain-of-custody · P3 Technical verification (signatures/headers/metadata/forensic handwriting) · P4 Corroboration · P5 Internal consistency (the anomaly that exposed the Nassar forgery) · P6 Disputed-by-party (a denial flags, doesn't prove). → high | medium | low | likely-forged | fabricated. Default lower when provenance/verification are weak; bulk size or an official channel does not raise an individual item's grade.

Tranches by provenance

TrancheAuthenticityWhy
Court-unsealed (Giuffre v. Maxwell, SDNY, Preska, 2024)HIGHCourt-vetted under protective orders — most reliable.
DOJ/FBI official (justice.gov/epstein; Jan-30-2026 ~3M pages/2,000 videos/180k images; ~6M may qualify)HIGH channel, per-item DISCLAIMEDOfficial, but DOJ disclaims per-item authenticity and flagged a likely-fake.
House Oversight ESTATE docs (20,000+ pp, Nov 2025, via subpoena; 3 emails re a sitting official)MEDIUMFrom a private estate — not court-sealed/classified/protective-ordered, so not court-vetted.
Media-published originals (e.g., WSJ birthday-book)item-dependentReputable possession/analysis raises an item, but specific items can still be disputed.
Anonymous leaks / cachesLOW unless verifiedSome leaked email caches passed crypto/metadata checks (4 experts: no fabrication evidence); others lack provenance — grade per item, not per cache.
Social-media imagesOFTEN FABRICATEDDocumented fakes; treat as fabricated until matched to an official source.

The "assume indeterminate forgeries" principle

No Epstein document should be authentic by default, because: the DOJ itself disclaims and flagged a fake; rapid mass release under political pressure is a known vector for un-vetted/altered/planted items; the public conflates court-verified records with leaks and social fakes; and the high stakes create incentives to forge in multiple directions — to falsely implicate, to falsely exculpate, or to discredit a whole tranche via one planted fake. Therefore grade each item — and note that a single proven forgery does not discredit independently-verified items, nor vice-versa.

Application to the project's existing threads

The project's Epstein-adjacent items are already graded and quarantined: spec-crypto-sec-epstein (Black/Apollo facts strong, directed-influence speculative) and temporal-bridges (the Summers OpenAI-board resignation after the House released correspondence — the resignation and the release are court/press-documented facts, independent of any single document's contents). This layer adds the rule: any reliance on a specific released document must carry its provenance grade, and contents are never treated as true merely because the document was released. None of it is in the proofs.
