Competing infrastructure corridors — BRI vs IMEC vs PGII/Lobito vs Global Gateway vs INSTC vs Middle Corridor (overlaps & inconsistencies, dated)
Built 2026-06-28 from research/spec-corridors.json. Anchor for the alignment-matrix (#144), String of Pearls (#145), and OPEC (#146) blocks. Cross-links China/India/Russia/Iran/EU/US_Government/Gulf + BRICS.
Frame. Maps the rival trade/transport-corridor programs and — the key ask — their inconsistencies: the same states sponsor multiple, often rival, corridors. China's BRI (2013) vs the US/India/Gulf/EU IMEC (2023) vs the G7's PGII + Lobito vs the EU's Global Gateway vs the Russia-Iran-India INSTC vs the Russia-bypassing Middle Corridor. Discipline. Corridors, sponsors, dates, and overlapping memberships are fact. "Trend conclusions" are stated as documented overlapping participation, not imputed motive — no "X feels Y," no unitary bloc "mind" (composition/division-fallacy guard). Overlay; excluded from the proofs.
1. The corridors (fact)
- BRI — China's Belt and Road Initiative (2013), the original: land "belt" + maritime "road" across ~150 countries. Debt-sustainability critiques are real, but the blanket "debt-trap" framing is itself contested (Rhodium/Chatham House found it overstated).
- IMEC — India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (G20, Sept 2023): India→UAE/Saudi→Israel/Jordan→EU rail+ports+H2+data; stalled by the post-Oct-2023 Gaza war (the Israel link).
- PGII — the G7's Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (2022), with the Lobito Corridor (Angola-DRC-Zambia rail to the Atlantic) for copper/cobalt, US+EU-backed.
- Global Gateway — the EU's €300B answer to BRI (2021).
- INSTC — the International North-South Transport Corridor (Russia-Iran-India via the Caspian), sanctions-resilient.
- Middle Corridor — the Trans-Caspian route (China-Central Asia-Caucasus-Turkey-EU) that bypasses Russia.
Fact.
2. The inconsistencies (documented memberships, not motive)
- India participates in IMEC (with the US, Gulf, EU, Israel) and in INSTC (with Russia and Iran) and in BRICS — while declining BRI.
- The EU backs IMEC, Global Gateway, the Lobito Corridor, and the Middle Corridor.
- Saudi Arabia and the UAE co-sponsor the US-led IMEC while being BRICS members and BRI participants.
- Turkey anchors the Middle Corridor (which routes around Russia) while remaining a major buyer of Russian energy.
- China anchors BRI and is the eastern origin of the Middle Corridor that Western backers promote to bypass Russia.
Fact — documented memberships; no unitary "intent" imputed to any bloc.
3. The reading discipline
Per the composition/division-fallacy guard: a state's simultaneous membership in rival corridors is recorded as institutional participation, not as a feeling, a plan, or a unitary national "mind." The defensible trend-conclusion is structural: corridor membership is non-exclusive and hedged — multi-alignment is the norm, not the exception — which makes "bloc" framings (West vs BRICS) leaky descriptions of who actually builds what with whom.
4. The honest reading
There is no single "China vs the West" corridor map; there is a lattice of overlapping, partly-rival programs in which the same states appear on multiple sides. The dated facts — BRI (2013), Global Gateway (2021), PGII/Lobito (2022), IMEC (2023, since stalled by Gaza), INSTC and the Middle Corridor as Russia-related hedges — show corridor membership is non-exclusive. The corpus records the overlaps as participation (not motive), draws the structural trend (multi-alignment/hedging is the norm), and leaves intent unattributed. Anchor for the alignment-matrix (#144), String of Pearls (#145), and OPEC (#146) blocks. Overlay; excluded from the proofs.
