China EV ecosystem + the EV transition — BYD/NIO/XPeng/Xiaomi, CATL batteries, the price war + tariff fight, and AV/robotaxi (both sides, dated)

Built 2026-06-28 from research/spec-china-ev.json. Sub-block of the auto epic (#177). Cross-links China, Geely, Tesla, EU, US_Government, Stellantis, Ford, NACS, and the critical-minerals/Lobito battery-input threads.

Frame. China's EV bloc — now the world's largest — plus the battery layer (CATL), the brutal domestic price war + overcapacity, the Western tariff response, and the AV/robotaxi race. Makers: BYD (global #1), SAIC/MG, NIO/XPeng/Li Auto, Xiaomi EV, Chery, Great Wall, Geely, Leapmotor (Stellantis JV). Discipline. Makers, BYD's lead, CATL's share, the tariffs, and the AV leaders are fact. The "overcapacity/subsidy dumping" vs "genuine cost leadership/protectionism" tariff debate is presented both ways with dates. Overlay; excluded from the proofs.

1. The makers (fact)

BYD — the global #1 (vertically integrated: own Blade LFP batteries + chips; overtook Tesla in quarterly BEV 2023-24; Berkshire trimmed/exited its early stake 2022-25); SAIC (state-owned; MG; the EU's largest CVD target); the "new forces" NIO / XPeng / Li Auto; Xiaomi EV (the phone giant's SU7, 2024); Chery (top exporter) and Great Wall; plus Geely (Zeekr/Polestar) and Leapmotor (Stellantis JV). Fact.

2. The price war (fact)

A brutal multi-year price war (BYD-led, 2023-25) amid overcapacity (utilization well below 100%), forcing consolidation and razor margins; in 2025 Beijing itself pushed back against destructive "involution" price-cutting. Fact.

3. The batteries (fact)

CATL is the world's #1 maker (~37% global share), with BYD #2; LG Energy Solution, Panasonic, Samsung SDI, SK On, CALB round out the field. CATL's reach is contentious in the West: it licensed its LFP tech to Ford's Marshall, Michigan plant (2023, later downsized amid pushback over Chinese-tech dependence). Battery demand cross-links the critical-minerals/Lobito threads (lithium/cobalt/nickel). Fact.

4. The tariffs (both ways, dated)

The honest middle: Chinese subsidies and real cost leadership both exist; the Mexico-assembly "backdoor" is a live concern. Both documented.

5. The AV/robotaxi race (fact)

Waymo (Alphabet) leads US paid robotaxi (multi-city); Baidu's Apollo Go leads China (scaled in Wuhan, 2024); Tesla launched an Austin robotaxi (2025); GM's Cruise wound down (2024, see #179); Pony.ai/WeRide are other Chinese players; Mobileye (Intel) supplies ADAS. Fact.

6. The honest reading

China owns the EV + battery scale story (BYD global #1; CATL ~37% of batteries; the largest EV market) — built on a mix of real cost leadership and state subsidies, both true, which is exactly why the West's tariff response (EU CVD + US 100%, 2024) is itself dual-natured (legitimate anti-subsidy + protectionism). The domestic price war/overcapacity is a genuine stress even for the winners. On autonomy, Waymo (US) and Apollo Go (China) lead paid robotaxi while Tesla pushes FSD. Tariff intent and "who's ahead" are presented both ways with dates. Overlay; excluded from the proofs.
