Auto-credit unwind — First Brands/UBS/Jefferies, Tricolor/JPMorgan, Carvana/DriveTime/Garcia, and the subprime auto-loan stress (both sides, dated)
Built 2026-06-28 from research/spec-auto-credit-unwind.json. Ties the auto thread (#177) into the corpus's financial-contagion core. Extends First_Brands, Tricolor_Holdings, Subprime_Auto_ABS, PrivateCredit_Funds, UBS, Jefferies, JPMorgan; cross-links US_Auto_Makers.
Frame. The 2025 leveraged auto-credit unwind. Two near-simultaneous Sept-2025 failures — First Brands (auto-parts supplier; off-balance-sheet supply-chain finance) and Tricolor (subprime auto lender; alleged double-pledged collateral) — burned bank + private-credit lenders (Jefferies, UBS, JPMorgan, Fifth Third) and revived the "who else is hiding losses" fear (Dimon's "cockroaches"). Layered on Carvana (used-car retailer + subprime ABS, controlled by the Garcia/DriveTime family) and record subprime auto delinquencies. Discipline. Bankruptcies, lender exposures, the Carvana/Garcia structure, and the delinquency data are fact; fraud allegations are flagged as alleged/under-investigation, not adjudicated. Both sides with dates. Overlay; excluded from the proofs.
1. First Brands (fact; fraud alleged)
First Brands Group — a roll-up auto-parts supplier (Raybestos, FRAM, TRICO, Carter) — filed Chapter 11 in Sept 2025 under ~$10B+ of liabilities, much of it off-balance-sheet supply-chain finance / receivables factoring. An examiner/lenders flagged that ~$2.3B of receivables-finance funds could not be accounted for — a structure widely compared to Greensill (whose 2021 collapse helped sink Credit Suisse, which UBS later absorbed). Fact (filing + missing-funds question); "fraud" alleged/under examination.
2. The First Brands lenders (fact)
Jefferies (its Leucadia-linked Point Bonita / first-lien receivables funds had large exposure), UBS (its O'Connor unit held First Brands supply-chain paper — a Greensill echo for the bank that absorbed Credit Suisse), plus a wide web of CLO / private-credit holders of First Brands' ~$6B+ leveraged loans. Fact (disclosed exposures).
3. Tricolor (fact; fraud alleged)
Tricolor Holdings — a subprime auto lender to thin-file/often-undocumented borrowers — collapsed into bankruptcy in Sept 2025 amid fraud allegations, including the same auto collateral allegedly pledged to multiple lenders. JPMorgan took a ~$170M charge and Fifth Third disclosed exposure; the back-to-back First Brands + Tricolor failures prompted Jamie Dimon's "when you see one cockroach, there are probably more" warning. Fact (bankruptcy + charges); fraud alleged/under-investigation.
4. Carvana (fact)
Carvana — the online used-car retailer — runs on subprime auto lending + securitization (forward-flow to Ally + auto ABS). It is controlled by the Garcia family: Ernest Garcia III is CEO, and his father Ernest Garcia II (Carvana's largest shareholder, who also owns DriveTime, the subprime dealer/servicer that backstops Carvana's loans) pleaded guilty to bank fraud in the 1990 Lincoln Savings/Keating S&L scandal. Carvana nearly collapsed under debt in 2022, then sharply recovered (2023-25) — leaving loan-quality + related-party (DriveTime) questions. Fact.
5. The macro backdrop (both ways)
US auto-loan balances at record highs (~$1.6T), record subprime 60+ day delinquencies (2024-25), widespread negative equity, and rising repossessions — stressing auto ABS. (A) Systemic-alarm: twin 2025 failures + record delinquencies + opaque private-credit/supply-chain finance = an unwind with hidden "cockroaches." (B) Contained: First Brands/Tricolor are idiosyncratic frauds/blowups, prime auto credit is fine, and losses are absorbable. Both documented.
6. The honest reading
The 2025 auto-credit unwind is real and dated: First Brands (supply-chain-finance opacity, ~$2.3B unaccounted, a Greensill echo hitting Jefferies + UBS) and Tricolor (subprime, alleged double-pledged collateral, hitting JPMorgan + Fifth Third) failed within weeks, reviving the "cockroaches" fear about private credit + off-balance-sheet finance — atop Carvana's Garcia/DriveTime related-party structure and record subprime auto delinquencies. Fraud claims are flagged as alleged/under-investigation; the systemic-vs-contained reading is presented both ways. This connects the auto industry to the corpus's contagion/private-credit threads. Overlay; excluded from the proofs.
