India — the swing power: DPI template, chips, Russian oil, and the US minerals tilt

India is the one large power courted by both blocs and captive to neither — the swing vote in the AI / materials / identity contests the rest of the corpus maps.

It wrote the DPI blueprint the West is now copying

India's Digital Public InfrastructureAadhaar (~1.4B biometric IDs) + UPI — is the global template for population-scale identity + payments, exported through the G20 / World-Bank channel (digitalid-orchestration-real-incentive). India now frames DPI as the base layer for sovereign AI (the "IndiaAI Mission"; Aadhaar's chief tied to the AI push) and pushes "DPI sovereignty" from software into hardware/cloud/AI. The world's largest biometric-ID state authored the model the West's digital-ID stack is adopting — India is upstream of the control-rail thesis, not downstream of it.

It's building a semiconductor base (behind, but moving)

India Semiconductor Mission 2.0: Tata Electronics + Taiwan's PSMC target first silicon at the Dholera fab by late 2026; Micron's ATMP plant in Sanand was inaugurated 28 Feb 2026 — the first operational facility of the cycle; Budget 2026-27 put ~₹8,000 crore into the mission. India starts in packaging / mature nodes and is years behind Taiwan/Korea on the leading edge — a real build, not parity.

It keeps buying Russian oil

Russia became India's dominant crude supplier — ~33% of India's crude (FY-ending Mar-2026, down from a ~36% peak) — discounted via the shadow-fleet system (geopolitics-russia-energy-arctic). India trimmed volumes under US pressure but did not cut Russia off: it monetizes the West's sanctions while staying inside the US tech/minerals orbit.

And it took the US critical-minerals deal

India + the US signed a critical-minerals / rare-earths framework (May 2026) — mining, processing, recycling, and tech for clean energy, semiconductors, and defense — explicitly to counter China (the same chokepoint macro-critical-minerals-equities attacks). As with the Gulf (fin-gulf-sovereign-ai-capital), the US pulls India toward its bloc with chips + minerals — but India keeps Russian oil + BRICS optionality.

The strategic position

India practices strategic autonomy / multi-alignment: a US tilt on tech, chips, and minerals; Russian energy; BRICS membership; its own DPI export agenda. Where the Gulf bought into the US bloc for chips (and was walled off from China), India takes the chips, keeps the Russian oil, and exports its own identity model — the swing power that can tilt the balance without joining a side.
